Biography

Paul D. Thompson, MD, is Chief of Cardiology, Emeritus at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT and Professor of Medicine, Emeritus at the University of Connecticut.  He was Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh (1992 to 1997) and on the faculty of Brown University (1978 to 1992). He has authored over 500 scientific articles on topics including: the treatment of cardiovascular risk factors, the effects of exercise on preventing and treating heart disease; the risk of cardiac events during exercise; the effects of statins on muscle function; and genetic factors affecting the exercise response. His past NIH funding includes the Preventive Cardiology Academic Award and for studies on the effect of exercise training on HDL metabolism; the effect of testosterone on endothelial function; genetic factors affecting muscle hypertrophy with exercise training; and the effects of statins on skeletal muscle. He is the Editor of two books entitled Exercise and Sports Cardiology (2001, 2019)and of the book Statin-Associated Muscle Symptoms (2020). He is a Past President of the American College of Sports Medicine.  Dr. Thompson’s clinical and research interest in exercise originated from his personal participation in distance running.  He qualified for the 1972 US Olympic Marathon Trials as a 3rd year medical student and finished 16th in the 1976 Boston Marathon.
